Landmark: Shell Mars B represents the first deepwater GoM project to expand an existing oil and gas field with significant new infrastructure.

The Shell West Boreas well is part of the Mars B project in Mars field, located in the Mississippi Canyon area 130 miles south of New Orleans, in water depths of 3,000 ft (914 m). West Boreas represents notable firsts, among them the first installation of a 15,000 psi Enhanced Vertical Deepwater Tree (EVDT), a system based on the successful portfolio of field-proven EVDT designs that provides the same safety, reliability and cost advantages. It was also the first use of the subsea control module (SCM) 620 in the Gulf of Mexico, and the first production from a subsea tie-back to Shell’s new Olympus platform.

FMC Technologies was selected to supply subsea equipment for the West Boreas project in 2010. The scope of the supply included six 15,000 psi EVDT systems along with controls systems, a six-slot manifold, and offshore installation, completion and commissioning support.
