Subsea Compression

Subsea gas compression has matured as a field development solution due to its potential to increase recovery and enable longer transport distances.  Some long tie-back gas fields, such as Shell's Ormen Lange and Statoil's Snøhvit, have been developed and designed as subsea-to-shore solutions without an offshore processing facility.  The economic opportunities and technical feasibilities of subsea gas compression allow this technology to be an attractive solution to boost wellstreams to overcome friction losses and maintain satisfactory production rates for long distance tie-backs.

  • Accelerates production
  • Increases recovery and extends field life
  • Enables longer transport distances
  • Reduces CAPEX by eliminating the need for surface production facilities
  • Facilitates production from reservoirs not otherwise economic
  • Improves flow assurance performance

Several key components of gas compression technology are well known from surface production applications, but require unique design features to meet the special requirements of subsea environments.  Special engineering focus ensures the performance of the compressor and motor unit, the control and power distribution system, as well as other key process components such as separation, cooling, and pumping.  FMC Technologies' industry leading expertise in subsea integration, process design, power systems, and controls provide a significant advantage in supplying robust systems that operate reliably over the life of the field.  Through our extensive in-house development program, FMC has qualified many of the core technologies required for gas compression.  Combined with superior building blocks like permanent magnet technology from Direct Drive Systems, FMC Technologies is uniquely positioned to offer solutions that provide a step-change in performance and reliability.
